Portrait of Basil Pursley looking at the camera, wearing headphonesOver the better part of the last year, I have become engrossed in journalism as a skill, practice, and art form. It was always something I considered doing, but had never fallen into the passion until I finally gained the courage to step directly into the rushing rapids of the field.

As I close out my week at NPR’s Next Generation Radio, I am reminded that I am merely at the beginning of my career. While this week is over, and I come to the end of an amazing project, I really feel as if this is a starting point for more growth, exploration, and mastery.

I believe I have gained such a robust foundation of skills that I intend to continue honing as I continue working on campus and beyond.

Additionally, the teachers and mentors helping with this project have been incredibly inspiring – not just because of their expertise but because they are all genuine human beings who have made me feel welcomed into the fold of reporting.

I feel privileged and honored to have been chosen to participate in this project, especially since I have been doing journalism for such a short amount of time. It has been incredibly gratifying to see my own progression and to see the future progression ahead of me.

As I look forward to a restful weekend ahead of me after one of the fastest, most intense weeks of my life, I am reminded of how grateful I am to be a journalist. To have the opportunity to briefly step into so many people’s lives and share their expertise and experience with the rest of the world in a tactful manner is an incredibly gratifying experience. I hope to only continue getting better at it.
